BOSTON, Aug. 1 — Almost every calorie-tracking app in the category was designed around an assumption that does not hold on a campus meal plan: that you cooked the food, so you know what went into it, and that you own a kitchen scale, so you know how much of it there is.
In a dining hall you know neither. Somebody else made the entrée, the portion came off a serving line and varied by whoever was holding the spoon, the sauce is an unknown quantity, and the salad you assembled has eleven components you did not measure. The standard advice — weigh everything, log by ingredient — is not slightly inconvenient here. It is unavailable.

The limits are real: published figures assume the standard serving, they rarely cover the salad bar or self-composed plates, and they say nothing about the extra ladle you took. Use them as the anchor for standard menu items, and use another method for everything else.
2. Photo-log the composed plates
For the plate you assembled yourself — the salad-bar build, the mixed stir-fry, the burrito bowl — photo logging is the workflow that fits the constraint. You cannot weigh it, you cannot look it up, and describing it in a search box takes longer than eating it. A photo takes two seconds in a queue.
3. Build a rotation of saved meals
Campus eating is unusually repetitive: most students cycle through roughly a dozen meals across a term. That is the workflow’s biggest structural advantage. Get one entry right — photograph it, correct the components against published data where it exists, save it — and you reuse that entry all semester instead of re-estimating daily. Campus dining items, chain-restaurant entries and packaged foods are more likely to already exist there than anywhere else, which turns logging into a search rather than an estimate. The free tier requires no card, but it carries ads and barcode scanning now sits behind Premium.
Cronometer — best free micronutrient data
For students on restricted diets, managing a deficiency, or tracking specific micronutrients — iron, vitamin D, B12, magnesium — Cronometer’s free tier is deeper on exactly that axis than anything else here, and deeper than PlateLens. Its database is anchored in USDA FoodData Central and the NCCDB rather than user submissions, which produces higher per-entry quality on the nutrients user-generated databases handle badly. If micronutrient fidelity is the point, this is the pick.
Lose It! and FatSecret — low-friction free alternatives
Both offer usable free tiers with no card required and fast search-based logging. Neither leads on any single axis above, but both clear the bar if you want something simple and free.
A workflow that survives a semester
- Week one, build the rotation. Log each meal you actually eat once, carefully. Correct it against published dining data where that exists. Save it.
- Photograph the plates you built yourself. Salad bars, bowls, mixed entrées — anything with a portion you chose.
- Reuse, don’t re-estimate. From week two the job is tapping a saved meal, not rebuilding it.
- Watch the trend, not the day. With estimated portions, a single day’s figure carries real error. A two-week average does not.

Dining-hall tracking is estimation, and pretending otherwise produces a false record and a discouraged user.
