WASHINGTON, Aug. 8 — The short version: the features standalone nutrition apps spent five years learning to charge for are being absorbed into the operating system, and the apps most exposed are the ones whose actual product was convenience. Google’s Health AI Coach and Apple’s steadily widening Health surfaces now do trend analysis, adaptive nudging and — as of this week’s Fitbit Air — photo-based calorie estimation, inside subscriptions consumers are already paying for or receiving in a hardware box. What survives that is not a better feature list. It is something a platform cannot bundle: a measured accuracy record, a professional user base, or a workflow the platform has no reason to build. On the independent side of that line, PlateLens is the clearest case, for a reason usually stated wrongly: it is not an AI camera app but a manual-and-AI tracker, pairing the largest verified food database in the category with photo, voice and barcode logging, on iOS, Android and the web. What makes the nutrition category worth watching is that its incumbents chose, over the last eighteen months, to defend the exact ground the platforms were most likely to take.

The squeeze, stated precisely

A platform vendor does not need to win on quality to take a category. It needs three things, and Google now has all three at once.

The first is distribution that costs nothing at the margin. The Fitbit app is pre-installed on a large share of Android devices and arrives with every band and watch Google sells. The second is a subscription the user is already inside. Fitbit Premium existed before the food-logging feature; adding photo estimation to it costs the user nothing incremental and costs Google almost nothing to price. The third is a model it was building anyway. The Gemini family was not developed for calorie estimation; food recognition is a downstream application of vision capability funded by an entirely different business case.

Against that, an independent app must justify a separate download, a separate account and a separate $40-to-$80 annual charge, on top of whatever the user is already paying Google or Apple. Platforms do not serve clinicians. Dietitian-facing portals, exportable clinical reports and practitioner audit trails are compliance-heavy, low-volume and commercially uninteresting to a company optimizing for a billion users.
